 ABOUT THE HOST

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) was established in 1945 with the main aim of preparing national standards and codes of practice, as well as providing facilities for the examination and testing of commodities. By means of its certification marks, SABS also provides an independent seal of quality for South African products.

The Standards Division of the SABS places great emphasis on the development, promotion and sale of standards. It is focused on consumer and industry participation in its processes. This is highlighted by the establishment of Sectoral Advisory Committees populated by individuals with expert knowledge of the dynamics in particular sectors. Sectoral Advisory Committees were established for the electrotechnical, information technology and mining sectors and it is expected that similar committees will be established for other sectors where a need exists.

The SABS's commercial activities are focused on, and committed to, supporting industry by providing conformity assessment services with a view to enhancing the competitiveness of the South African economy. In this manner, the company contributes to improving the quality of life of all South Africans.

SABS provides products and services in: In the following key sectors: The SABS services covers quality, risk, environmental, occupational health and safety, and product specific certification. The SABS Training Centre offers outcomes-based training in all management system standards.
